I have watched my poor Trixie Belle struggle so many times to get on the couch like the other dogs do and she just couldn’t seem to make it. I bought her some steps from a retail store and they didn’t work for her as the steps were too narrow and she is a long dog. So after much frustration of seeing her struggle I finally decided to make some steps for her. The idea came from seeing boxes that were being mailed to my Dh stacked up together. So here is what I came up with.
I took 3 of the military flat rate boxes that were used and filled them with something that would add weight to them as well as keep them from crushing in. For instance, one of them has old bathroom rugs that I will not be needing. Then I duct taped them together.
I then cut out some fleece to sew together to make a cover for them. I did not measure the fleece, only drew an outline of the boxes and cut out the pieces.
Side view. I also placed the steps on a piece of rubber drawer liner so they would not move around.
So now my sweet baby can get up on the couch all by herself and take a nap. 🙂
Oh my gosh…what a cute and easy idea! Our dog has bad knees and may need something like that eventually. I’ll need to remember this great idea. Thanks!
You are a good mama!!
She looks so happy =)
What a great idea! I love the material you used to cover it so cute.
Hi! I found your blog while googling ideas for doggie stairs. I loved your idea! I just wrote a blog post on our problem with the dog, and I linked your great idea. I hope you don’t mind!

I love this idea! I am a huge DIY person as well. I also write for a website all about pets and wanted to let you know I added this page as a link on my blog! http://www.yeepet.com/blogs/Everything-You-Need-To-Know-About-Dog-Steps-1489
What a brillant idea! I’ll be getting a puppy soon, and store bought dog stairs are very expensive. This is a cheap and fast solution!
Brilliant on the doggie steps…gonna try it. Right now we use a moroccan puff but I want my pup to have one more step. Thanks
Brilliant – thanks for sharing!
Thanks for a great idea! will definitely try this for my babe – a cocker spaniel age 15… Thought about buying one, but making it myself, like you did, is so much better! thx again!
Thank you so much, I have been trying to figure out how not to have to pick up a hammer!
Brilliant. Thanks for this idea truly
I was with you until it came to the sewing parts?
Absolutely LOVE THIS! I have a cat with no back feet and she climbs my couch to get up. I am going to try this to see if she will cooperate. The narrow steps wouldn’t work for her either.
What size flat rate boxes boxes did you use ? I have an older 12 lb dachshund
I am using dialysis boxes for our yorkie to get on our HIGH beds. Did NOT think of putting something in them for weight, and YES, I planned on using the drawer liner for the bottom. I did cut out a finger hole in the highest point so we could move it. I am using left over matllesse fabric, and I am using a little batting on top of each of the steps. Now, I just need to glue it all down. Here Stella Bella, Nana has you some steps! 🙂 Grand puppy, what can I say.
Excuse me. Dialysis boxes taped together, with lots of tape. Heavy duty boxes for sure, double walled.
What a fabulous and affordable idea! Thank you so very much for sharing! Our Bella is going to really like this!
I have a blind 12 year old toy poodle who likes to be on the bed with me .I followed your instructions and now have one happy little boy.Thank you for the wonderful idea.
Me and my daughter made a variation of this tonight for our 2 little Chihuahuas. I used Gorilla tape to hold it together then used a king size pillow case to cover that matches my bedroom set. Looks sooo good. Only cost me $8.00 for the tape!! Great idea!
Great idea! I taped and weighted the boxes and covered them in pretty contact paper, bought a door mat at Dollar Tree and cut it in half and glued it on the steps. My cat is soooo happy now! And I only spent $3 in supplies!
OMGoodness, thank you so much for this idea! We bought steps also but our doxie wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Thank goodness I got my money back. Then I saw several people making their dogs one out of pvc pipe, I thought: Cool! Hubbie and I can do that!” Yeah, well, the material list is still sitting in the same place I left it 3 weeks ago…. But THIS…I can do by little ol’ lonesome! Thanks a million!
Thank you for showing me this. I was thinking about purchasing one! Now I can make it with the millions of boxes I have!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
What a great idea
What a great idea thank You
